February 2024 New Tales and Trails

The Tales and Trails team have been working very hard to bring these trails and tales to you. First the ideas, then the chatting and gathering stories, then the research. Graham has walked his Trail of 3 Bridges, created maps, transcribed and written the trail and added his own drone images, and he also learned how to upload to the website.

Cheryl has walked the trail of Largiebeg, taken photographs, transcribed pages of text. Written the trail and it will be live very soon. She has also learned how to add to the website.

Meanwhile Barbara has managed to put the history of these trails onto the website. This involved working from notes taken at our regular meeting ( you may have helped with this) It took a considerable length of time trawling our facebook posts for pictures and your amazing informative comments, all these help to build the history. Then there are our extensive archives of documents and images. All of these have been generously shared by our members. (You defininately helped with that) And research, there is always research. We use our archives, consult many old Arran books, British newspaer archives, Scotlands People and Arran Heritage Museum archives

Maggie is busy researching family history following a recent request, we always have the need for family history so Maggie will always be busy.

Susan’s trail is a family trail and we hope to go live with it very soon. Other trails are pending. Janet is busy writing up a tale and she and George are always on-hand to answer our many questions. We call them the oracles! We need them on video you will be amazed at their memories.

So please check out all of our heritage tales and trails.

Welcome to Whiting Bay Memories.
This is the first post to our new website. We are very excited about building this site and hope you will enjoy it for years to come. Over the past few years the memories group have been donated many pictures, stories, video footage, memories and documents. The collection is far too enjoyable to remain in boxes and is not always suitable for our wonderful facebook group. Here we will offer some articles with a longer read. Share some of our special exhibitions from our past events, and always add new items when we can.
Remembering we are a holiday island and village, you can expect to see more during the winter months though.

Whiting Bay & Districts Memories

Our group is normally known as Whiting Bay Memories, but our districts are included in the official group title and especially in our memories.

You may know us better from previous activities in the village.

Whiting Bay Memories facebook group

This popular group now has over one thousand members! members are invited to contribute their pictures, ask questions, share their memories and enjoy lots of interaction.

As an advancement of the group, the organisers decided to have a formal group in order to make our contributed items more accessible to all and allow a more indepth look at the village to compliment our facebook group and deliver some of out benefits on a more regular basis. In summary we decided not to leave our memories in boxes for a couple of years! Now we look forward to sharing more with you through this site.

In March 2019 we constituted our group, with the following objects;

Object:

The object of the group shall be to advance the education of the local community  and interested general public in the history and social history of the village of Whiting Bay and it’s Districts on the Isle of Arran (KA27)

To preserve the village heritage by the collection and compilation of writings, memories, memorabilia, photographs, records, items, artefacts and writings of local historic interest and to preserve, protect and retain the articles for community use and enjoyment.
